Hariti Gandhara, from the Yusufzai region, North West Frontier Province, Pakistan 2nd-3rd century AD Hariti was a fierce ogress who devoured children. By his teachings the Buddha was able to convert her into a protector of children; her character in this image is thus benign. In later times she has been worshipped as the goddess of smallpox.
