Hariti was a fierce ogress who devoured children.
By his teachings the Buddha was able to convert her into a protector of children; her character in this image is thus benign.
In later times she has been worshipped as the goddess of smallpox.
She is the consort of Panchika, general to
Kubera the god of riches.
